    Just goes to prove that Ecuadorian government is unfit for the task. You think something like that would happen if it were a part of a developed country?

  9. Anonymous says:

    Inability to control is the fault of the government.
    Think why it’s there in the first place. Don’t be so naive.

    You confuse fault with inability to control a few rebels. Is it your fault if some vandal breaks something, and you were not able to stop him, or is it the vandals fault?

    The government of Ecuador has spent millions of dollars ridding the islands of invasive animals, and trying to restore them to the original state. Local fishermen want unfettered access to the resources and have destroyed a lot of property in riots, they took the local govenor hostage, beat him up, they threatened to kill all the rare tortoises and more. The market for shark fins was hard to block, then the fishermen sold shark fins to waiting Japanese boats outside Ecuador waters.

    @manderssteve
    Ecuador government must educate the locals and share the profit from ecotourism.
    If the locals are resorting to hunting wildlife for meager gains, it’s the government’s fault.

    I am torn between telling the whole world that they must visit the Galapagos, and keeping my mouth shut to protect it. It seems that the tourists all want preservation. The battle is between the locals who have killed most of the hammer head sharks for fins, want to catch every thing else, and the other locals see the beauty of their islands as their best resource.
